Project Livelihood 

“Establishment of Basic Rights, Dignity and Quality of life for the Adibashi and hardcore poor Bengali people” project supported by Andheri-Hilfe e.V Mackestrasse 53 D-53119, Bonn, Germany has been being implemented at Sadar, Panchbibi and Akkelpur sub districts under Joypurhat district in Bangladesh covering 3000 Households since April 2008. The interventions of the project are majored in institution development and capacity building of Dalit, Adibashi and extreme poor Bengali people, awareness building through regular meetings and community level, skills development training on IGA, sustainable agriculture and climate change adaptation practices, health and sanitation as well as vocational training on diverse skills for creating employability in job markets. Apart from these DMSS has been operating pre-primary education for Adibashi and Dalit children. 


For promoting health and sanitation for Adibashi and Dalit people DMSS have been providing sanitation hardware support e.g. tube-well and latrine installation in Adibashi and Dalit communities. Besides, through this project DMSS is also spreading awareness to develop reproductive health of adolescent Adibashi and Dalit girls and boys. It also develops sanitation skills of the section through training and discussion resulting in reduction of health hazards to the extent. DMSS develops Traditional Birth Attendants (TBA) at community level for promoting maternity and child health service delivery and save labor / save child birth for extreme poor Dalit and Adibashi women who do not have access to public sector service institutions concerned due to racial discrimination and deprivations. Here, DMSS develops skills of such TBAs through training delivery.


For promoting rights based opportunities and protecting rights and empowerment, DMSS is developing public-private partnership between Adibashi/ Dalit groups, public sector service and social institutions through workshops and meeting for promoting sustainable service delivery to Adibashi and Dalit people resulting in civic engagement that creates progressive elimination in favour of Adibashi and Dalit people in the communities. DMSS implicates civil society groups as the watchdog on the services of different service institutions.
For promoting their legal rights and social justice DMSS provides legal aid support to extreme poor Dalit and Adibashi people. In gender development, DMSS is developing awareness of Adibashi and Dalit people through regular discussion, campaigning and training on gender equity and women rights as well as it facilitates advocacy with different rights activists, women institutions and duty bearers resulting in a gender equity based society in Adibashi communities. To develop mass awareness and sensitizing mass people on rights and empowerment of Adibashi and Dalit people, DMSS organizes Day Observation through rally, campaigning and discussions.


DMSS develops skills and capacity of the group members on diverse life-skills e.g. vegetable production, vermi compost production, bamboo based handicrafts production and promotion, poultry rearing, beef fattening, goat rearing and so on. Beside trainings DMSS develops IGAs of extreme poor Adibashi and Dalit households resulting in livelihood and income security and social protection of aboriginal section. DMSS explores diversified income generation approach for Adibashi households through exploring their employment opportunities with market survey, inherent skills and consumers’ needs. We also provide financial backstopping support/ Micro-credit for self-help employment and income generation of the extreme poor Dalit and Adibashi people.


DMSS operates non-formal pre and primary education programme for extreme poor Dalit and Adibashi people at different Dalit and Adibashi communities in Joypurhat District for developing literacy and awareness on rights and empowerment.

DMSS organizes different recreational activities for conserving Adibashi heritage amongst Adibashi children.

For behavioural changes amongst Adibashi and Dalit children DMSS conducts awareness building and motivational programme for Adibashi and Dalit children at community level.


To self-sustain and self-operate their rights based interventions as well as to self-reflect their rights based issues and development benefits, the Apex groups is needed to be formed after a certain maturity of community groups. the Federation/ Apex groups are developed actually when Dalit and Adibashi people/ groups are able to run their rights based activities by themselves. When there minimize the discrimination in the society and whenever it is supposed to create their equal accessibility then the Apex groups are developed by DMSS to take a steering of Dalit and Adibashi groups.
Here, community based Dalit and Adibashi groups are organized to develop their macro group in name of Apex group starting at Upazila level. They also develop Upazila groups comprising all community groups and these Upazila groups finally form District level Apex group tends to develop the regional group. The Apex group is activated as the pressure group and it is larger platform of Dalit and Adibashi section for taking an unequivocal stand on the points of their rights and empowerment.
DMSS organizes regular meetings and trainings for Federation/ Apex group members for their planning on different ethical issues.
